Craft Land is run by Akhil Ahmed, who took over the family business after completing his graduate studies in science. He lives in Saharanpur, a city located in Uttar Pradesh in north India. Saharanpur is famous for its wood products and it is here that Akhil’s family business is located.
At any point in time, Akhil has 25 artisans working with him. While Akhil’s business originally specialized in seshamwood products, soaring prices have forced producers like him to switch to the cheaper alternative of mango wood. Mango wood is a versatile raw material that can be carved, stained and given a variety of finishes to appeal to differenttastes.
Craft Land used to be a small establishment, outsourcing various stages of the cutting and finishing processes to other artist groups. Since its work with Asha Handicrafts Association began in 2006, Akhil has been able to slowly expand his workshop to include all stages of production in-house.
Akhil is satisfied with the direction in which he has steered his business and looks forward to its further growth.
